Ubuntu is the most popular distribution of Linux. GIMP is a free photo editing software available for Ubuntu.

Open the terminal by pressing Alt+Ctrl+T and add this repository by entering the commands below

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp

sudo apt-get update

After adding the repository, Install GIMP by using the following command

sudo apt-get install gimp

If you are already on a older version of GIMP then first use the following command to uninstall the existing version and follow the instructions above to install the latest version.

sudo apt-get autoremove gimp gimp-plugin-registry
